  • The awe-inspiring Milky Way bears semblance to a celestial flipper, reaching out to a solitary penguin standing on a rocky outcrop in the Curio Bay Fossil Forest.  With a declining population of less than 5000, the endangered Yellow-eyed Penguin is one of the world’s rarest penguins, and found only in New Zealand.<br />

Protecting our night sky from light pollution is not simply for the sake of humans, but also for our wildlife.  Although research of penguins’ orientation at night is still in its infancy, scientists believe that birds rely not only magnetism but also the stars and celestial rotation.

  • Breeding colonies are found off the coast of south-east Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. One small colony is also found further north at Norfolk Island (to Australia).  In New Zealand, three mainland colonies have been established at Cape Kidnappers, Farewell Spit, and Muriwai.

  • In one of the many stories about the demigod Māui, the stitchbird (hihi) refused to fetch water for him after he had captured the sun and slowed it down. Māui threw the bird into the fire, burning its feathers. Hihi means rays of the sun, and the bird’s name refers to the male’s yellow breast plumage – a reminder of sun and fire.

The Lady of the Snows (1818m) is off in the distance, with Safe Mountain (the rounded peak) off to the right.  Safe Mountain (1634m) was named by Rhys Buckingham, who completed the first ascent in 1973.

  • Weavers are famous for their intricately woven nests.  There are several distinctively different nest desings.  The one shown on the left is that of a Village Weaver.  The brown color of the nest is because the woven material has dried over time.

  • Because of its fearsome appearance, this harmless fish-eating Grey Nurse Shark was once killed indiscriminately as a suspected man-eater.  Sharks have an endless supply of teeth.  When one falls out, another grows in to replace it.  A shark may go through 10,000 teeth in a lifetime!

  • The peregrine falcon is the true jet fighter of the skies!  As one of the deadliest birds of prey, it is the world's fastest bird.  It swoops down on its panic-stricken prey at speeds of up to 273 miles per hour (440 kilometers per hour)!  It will often use its talons to strike the prey in order to stun it and knock it to the ground.  The peregrine Falcon then picks up its prey off the ground and carries it to a sheltered place to eat.  Main prey include birds that fly in flocks, such as pigeons, parrots, and starlings.
