  • The kokako is mostly heard and seen at dawn and in the morning.  In contrast to the energetic and bright voices of tuis and bellbirds, the kokako's mournful song is a reminder of the destruction of New Zealand birdlife and forests.   • NZ Dotterel nests are mere scrapings in the sand, placing their eggs and chicks at much vulnerability to storms, predation, off-road vehicles, and careless feet.  As depicted in this image, the nest is commonly among shells and driftwood just above the high tide mark, with two to three eggs simply laid in a scrape in the sand.
