  • Originally native to western states, the house finch was illegal introduced to the eastern states in North America, being released by pet breeders in the 1940s.  In the eastern states, they were known as "Hollywood Finches".  While the male house finch has red on its head and breast and rump, the female has a streaked chest.

  • The Rainbow Bee-eater is very appropriately named, both for its colors and its diet.  It can expertly de-sting bees, wasps, and hornets, by rubbing and bashing the insect against a perch before eating it.  It is the only bee-eater found in Australia, and can eat as many as 100 bees each day!
