Tiritiri Matangi's historic lighthouse was built just 15 years after New Zealand's first lighthouse (in Pencarrow, Wellington 1849).
The Tiritiri Matangi Lighthouse remains thh oldest lighthouse still in operation in New Zealand. Instead of a fixed light, it now operates on a flashing light, flashing once every 15 seconds. The light itself is 91 metres above sea level and can be seen for 18 nautical miles (33 kilometres) in standard weather seconds.
