Silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis) were blown across the Tasman Sea from Australia to New Zealand in 1856. The Maori called these birds "tauhou" which translates to "little stranger".
Looking closely at these pictures, you can see a distinctive ring of white feathers around their eye, which has led to silvereyes also being referred to as white-eyes, or waxeyes.
