New Zealand Fur Seal
57 images Created 10 Jan 2010
The New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri, or kekeno) tend to breed on steep boulder beaches with plenty of crevices and tidal pools.
In contrast to the Hooker Sea Lion, the New Zealand Fur Seal has a more pointed nose, is smaller, swims primarily with its front flippers, walks on land by moving its hind flippers together, has a finder and denser fur coat, and prefers rocky shores.
Images in this gallery are from various locations in South Island, including Kaikoura, Otago Peninsula, the Catlins coast, Fiordland, and Stewart Island.
